As many of you may or may not know, as a participant of the JET Program I was offered a contract to work for the Samani Board of Education with the potential to work up to 5 years. My contract was initially set to end July 2022, but due to difficulties with getting new JETs into Japan during COVID, I was offered a one-time-only extension of 1 year. This means that my JET contract ends at the end of July 2023, and this is the end of my 6 years in the JET Program.
わかっている読者とわからない読者もいると思うが、私はJETプログラムの参加者として、最長5年間様似町教育委員会で働く契約を結ばせてくれた。私の契約は昨年7月に終了する予定だったが、コロナ期間中に新しいJET参加者の日本入国が難しくなったので、2022年に一度だけ1年間の延長を受けた。つまり、今月が私のJETプログラム最終月となる。私のJET契約は2023年7月末まで。
So what’s next for the bear family?
さて、クマ家は次に何をするのだろうか？
Papa Bear and I have had many discussions over the past 2 years about what we would do when my contract ended here. What would be best for our family? Did we want to stay in Japan? Go back to the US? Try moving to a different country? Most of our ideas for what we wanted to do kept coming back to the same thing, we wanted to stay here in Samani, but we weren’t sure if it was even a possibility.
パパベアと私はこの2年間、ここでの契約が終わったらどうするかについて何度も話し合った。家族として、最もいい行動はどうすればいい？日本に残る？アメリカに帰る？違う国に引っ越してみる？私たちのやりたいことのアイデアのほとんどは、同じことに戻ってくる。私たちは様似に残りたいが、それが可能かどうかさえわからなかった。
About a year ago, just before I received the 1-year extension, the geopark manager approached me about extending our stay here. I was so surprised! It’s a rare occurrence to be offered full-time employment by the same organization you work for as a JET participant. I began negotiating a new contract with the geopark and the board of education. The terms were favorable so I agreed.
約1年前、1年間の延長を受ける前に、ジオパークのマネージャーから様似に残って、今の仕事を続けることを打診されたんだ。とても驚いた！JET参加者と同じ組織から本職員になることを提案されるなんて、めったにあることではない。私はジオパークと教育委員会と新しい契約の交渉を始めた。条件が良かったので、会計年度職員になることに同意した。
I signed a new contract that lasts until March 2025, with the possibility of extending the contracted period. So for now, we decided to remain here in Hokkaido for a few more years!
2025年3月までの新しい契約を結んだが、契約期間を延長する可能性もある。だから今のところ、あと数年はこの北海道に残ることにした。様似の皆さん、今後もよろしく！
